Our organization began with the same desire that all parents have –that our children grow up to live happy and productive lives. But when you’re the parent of a child with special needs, that dream may not always be an easy reality. There are many individuals with developmental delays who grow up to be adults ‘caught in the middle.’ Not quite able to fully live on their own; not confident enough to navigate a social community without assistance; but fully able to enjoy and embrace life, work in a productive, directed manner and contribute back. Unfortunately, the residential choices for adults with moderate developmental delays are limited. Parents are faced with either institutional situations or having their adult child live with them at home – neither of which allows the individual with special needs to lead a full life.
We believe there are lessons to be learned from senior living. Why not create a community akin to the choices available to those 55 or older? Why can’t our children live in a community that offers activities, security, dining options and social experiences?
Thus our dream began – to create an intentional community that sustains and enhances the life ahead.
