Garden Coordinator

SUMMARY

The Sunflower Hill Garden Coordinator is an integral part of the Sunflower Hill Programs Team. This role works in the Sunflower Hill Garden.  The garden teaches horticultural and life skills in a therapeutic garden setting to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Reporting to the Programs Manager and working closely with the Garden Teacher, this role will be responsible for the oversight and maintenance of the garden infrastructure, crop plan, and will perform gardening and field work tasks to provide a supportive environment for the onsite programs. The Coordinator will also be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with local nonprofits for produce donation.

In addition, on non-program days the Coordinator and Garden Teacher will work together to complete garden field work. On program days, the Coordinator supports the Garden Teacher to implement  dynamic programs for program participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain an overall garden design.
  • Identify weekly garden task lists, establish a plan for completion, and execute field work, to include delegating tasks for the Garden Teacher, garden volunteers, and program participants.
  • Record landscape changes in the overall garden master plan, including: irrigation layout, planting bed orientations, walkways, themed gardens, etc.
  • Accurately forecast and track monthly garden expenses.
  • Work to improve the overall soil health through organic and regenerative farming practices.
  • Keep detailed notes of year-to-year crop plan success and failures, which will be used to guide future planting efforts.
  • Procure tools and equipment for garden projects and daily garden maintenance as outlined in the budget.  Identify and guide contractors providing specialty services as needed.
  • Operate and maintain motorized equipment as needed to include but not limited to: front loading tractor, BCS walk-behind tractor, power tools, and landscaping equipment.
  • Track and report harvest data.
  • With guidance from the Programs Manager, oversee development and implementation of garden related micro-business (including the sale of plants and produce, weekly produce boxes, cut flowers, and U-Pick, etc.)
  • Produce Donation Management: Develop and maintain relationships with local nonprofits, as well as coordinate regular donation efforts.
  • Volunteer Management: Coordinate the operation of the on-site Harvest Stand and lead any volunteers who assist with this effort. Direct the day-to-day tasks and training to general garden volunteers and program volunteers.
  • Online/Virtual Curriculum Development and Instruction: Working with the Programs Manager, plan and provide regular pre-recorded video lessons/garden updates, and when needed, instruct live classes for participants.
  • Support Garden Teacher to facilitate program/class visits. This may include task launching, working alongside our I/DD participants in the garden, offering guidance and task modification in the field as needed, and leading closing snack/discussion time. In the absence of the Garden Teacher, act as the Lead Teacher to facilitate program group visits and program volunteer management.
  • Assist in routine grant reporting and grant proposals providing content and guidance as needed.
  • Represent and act as liaison for Sunflower Hill during the Hagemann Ranch monthly meetings

 

SCHEDULE

  • Garden Days: M/T/F 8:00am-2:30pm (19.5hrs/week)
  • Program & Volunteer Days: W/TH 8:00am-2:30pm (13 hrs./ week)
  • Additional Garden Admin Hours and Regular Meetings (7.5hrs/ week) *exact day/times TBD
  • Approximately 2 Saturdays/month: 8am-12:30pm (*FLEX day TBD)
  • One evening a month for Heritage Guild Meeting (2 hours max)

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • College bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Experience

  • Experience and strong knowledge of horticulture required.
  • One or more years of teaching experience or experience working with individuals with Intellectual/Developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • Volunteer management, including training and leadership, preferred.

Licensure and Other Requirements

  • Valid CA driver’s license and automobile insurance
  • Ability to pass background check

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Proven knowledge of horticulture as it pertains to a teaching garden.
  • Creative Problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
  • A flexible, and supportive approach toward working with teams.
  • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Intermediate or higher computer skills: MS Office applications with the ability to learn software as needed for curriculum development.
  • Knowledge of how to use basic and motorized garden equipment and garden tools.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to constantly lift, bend stretch and stand during entire shift
  • Ability to frequently kneel, squat, bend, and stoop, twist and reach overhead with repetitive motions and walking up/down ladders
  • Generally, works in a moderately noisy outdoor environment with interruptions while teaching.
  • Employee is exposed to outdoors weather conditions throughout the year.
