Dr. Lynne Mielke, a member of the Sunflower Hill board, represented Sunflower Hill at the City of Pleasanton Human Services Commission Focus Group meeting on July 9, 2013. The purpose of the meeting was to get perspectives from service providers on what the priorities should be for Pleasanton, and the areas of highest need for our residents. The meeting was lead by Jennifer Suskind of Resource Development Associates, and referenced changes that have occurred in the area since the last needs assessment was done by the city in 2011.
The number one need that was identified was affordable housing – something we resonate with! Other areas of need included mental health and substance abuse, medical care, transportation, senior services, child care, domestic violence prevention, etc. Sunflower Hill was pleased to join other groups in attendance, including East Bay Community Services, REACCH, VFW, and the Senior Center to present our point of view. And what is our point of view? We believe there is a great opportunity (and need) to address affordable housing for individuals with special needs. With one in 50 children now being diagnosed with autism, new innovative approaches to housing and developing a sense of community will be needed.
It was a great opportunity to network with other non-profit groups and Pleasanton-area service providers. And kudos to the city of Pleasanton for providing the opportunity and asking the questions!
