Alice Waters is the founder of the Edible Schoolyard (ESY). The original ESY garden is located at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, CA. The ESY garden area was originally a parking lot over 18 years ago and is now a beautiful, inviting, and inspiring Edible Schoolyard Garden and Kitchen.
The mission of the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley is to teach essential life skills and support academic learning through hands-on classes in a one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom. The Edible Schoolyard curriculum is fully integrated into the school day and teaches students how their choices about food affect their health, the environment, and their communities.
There are two main components of ESY:
Garden classroom: Teaching about seasons, weather, soil, water, plants, plant life cycle, plant growth, irrigation, chickens, food development, land & food sustainability
Kitchen classroom: Teaching students about food ingredients, personal health, food preparation, cooking, social & personal development
The Edible Schoolyard Network connects educators around the world to build and share a K-12 edible education curriculum.

The Edible Schoolyard Academy trains educators to create powerful and sustainable edible education programs in their schools and communities. At the ESY Academy you learn and experience first-hand the core principles and practical tools for bringing academic subjects to life in the kitchen, garden, and lunchroom. Whether you are a new or seasoned practitioner, the Academy will strengthen your program and build your leadership in the field. Some key values of ESY are:
- Recognize that beauty in everything matters!
- Focus on things that develop the heart and soul
- Slow down, appreciate, learn about and savor our wonderful natural world
ESY key focus is to alter lifestyle – battling a good battle against our fast-paced non-nature centric urban world. They emphasized repeatedly to go slow and deep, ie. do a good thorough job in developing and teach one thing or component before moving on to more components. Don’t rush and try to expand too quickly!

Sunflower Hill was accepted into Alice Water’s Edible Schoolyard Academy in June 2014. Lynn Monica (VP of Board) and Chris Bogert (Board Member) represented Sunflower Hill and attended the academy. This was a wonderful learning experience and networking opportunity to kick off our gardening efforts! Sunflower Hill is now an ESY Academy alumni member of the Edible Schoolyard network. We will use this network to continue to learn and share our experience with others as we build our own Sunflower Hill Edible garden.
