Garden Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in learning about organic gardening, forming connections with your community, and relieving stress in a natural setting? Become a Sunflower Hill Garden volunteer! A few hours spent volunteering at Sunflower Hill Garden can make a huge impact in the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and help provide fresh, nutritious produce for our community. As a Garden Volunteer, you will help with harvesting, planting, weeding, mulching, composting and more! Your work as a garden volunteer keeps our garden maintained and operational for our weekly programs and produce donation efforts. No experience is required.

FRIDAY GARDEN VOLUNTEER

If you are looking for an ongoing volunteer opportunity, see below for the information about becoming a Friday volunteer.

Commitment

  • Volunteer shifts are Friday mornings between 9 a.m. – noon
  • One (1) time per month for a duration of 6 months.
  • Must pass a background check* prior to volunteering.
  • Must be 13 years or older.
  • Interested volunteers ages 16-17 must have parental or guardian consent.
  • Interested volunteers ages 13-15 must have 1:1 parental or guardian accompaniment. Parents or guardians of a youth volunteer must apply as a volunteer separately.

Responsibilities**

Tasks may include planting, pruning, harvesting, sorting, washing, prepping and storing fresh produce, weed management, preparing garden beds, mulching walk spaces, and other landscape maintenance and cleanup. Training and ongoing support will be provided.

SECOND SATURDAY COMMUNITY WORKDAY VOLUNTEERS

Interested in spending a Saturday morning working in the garden with us? Join us for our Second Saturday Community Workdays! Registration is required to volunteer as space is limited. Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in registering for our community workday.

VOLUNTEER GROUPS: Youth Groups, Clubs, Corporate Groups or Other Organizations

Interested in having your organization or club spend a day volunteering outdoors? We’d love to have your group volunteer with us out at the Sunflower Hill Garden at Hagemann Ranch! Groups can expect to work on tasks such as harvesting, compost projects, garden bed preparation, mulching, weeding, and other seasonal tasks as needed.

  • Volunteer groups are generally scheduled outside of Garden Program hours (Garden Program hours are Tuesday – Friday 9am -12:30pm). We try to work with your group’s schedule needs where possible, but may not be able to accommodate all schedule requests.
  • Due to staffing and limited resources, we typically can only accommodate groups of up to 20-25 people at a time.
  • For youth volunteer groups, all volunteers under the age of 18 must have parental or guardian consent to volunteer. We require that for every 5 youth volunteers there must be at least 1 adult chaperone. Youth volunteers must be 13 years old or older.
