What is Measure W?
Measure W is a voter-approved, 10-year half-cent sales tax passed in November 2020 to fund homelessness services, health services and essential county programs. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors specifically directed a percentage of these funds to support food security for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and to help address any possible reductions in CalFresh/SNAP programs.
What’s the process?
Six local nonprofits — Sunflower Hill, Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN), Deaf Plus Adult Community, Toolworks, La Familia, and Strides — as well as the Regional Center of the East Bay, have been working over the last few months to distribute the cards in Alameda County. SLS/ILS agencies, Day program and Housing providers are also helping – to ensure as many individuals with I/DD as possible might benefit.
What am I receiving?
You are receiving a free $100 grocery gift card from a local food distribution partner (aka, Safeway, Walmart, etc.). These cards do come with restrictions (no alcohol, tobacco or lottery tickets) but may otherwise be used as desired for your fresh produce, food or other staple needs. Using the card will not affect your SNAP benefits. The cards do not expire.
